Pr. Josep Dalmau received his MD and PhD from the Autonoma University of Barcelona, Spain. He trained in Neuro-oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York and afterwards was appointed to the faculty. After 11 years at Memorial, Dr. Dalmau was appointed co-director of Neuro-oncology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and in 2002 he joined the University of Pennsylvania as Professor of Neurology. He is currently Research Professor at the Catalan Institute for Research and Advanced Studies and the Institute for Biomedical Investigations at Hospital Clinic, University of Barcelona, Spain as well as Adjunct Professor of Neurology at Penn in Philadelphia.

In his initial work Dr. Dalmau discovered several immune-mediated paraneoplastic diseases, and in most recent studies his group discovered anti-NMDAR encephalitis and 9 additional disorders mediated by other antibodies against ion channels and synaptic receptors which represent a new category of diseases. His current work is focused in refining the syndromes of these diseases, identify the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, and develop new treatment strategies besides conventional immunotherapy.

Dr Dalmau is member of the National Academy of Medicine and many other scientific societies; he has served as Chair of the Autoimmune Neurology section at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and is currently Editor of Neurology: Neuroimmunology and Neuroinflammation.
